Food Photography for DoorDash & Uber Eats: What Sells

For many restaurants, delivery apps are now the biggest storefront they have. On DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub, customers cannot smell the food or see your dining room. The photo is the menu. A clear, appetizing picture can be the difference between a customer tapping your dish or scrolling past it.

Here is what makes delivery-app food photos work, and the mistakes we see most often.

Why photos matter so much on delivery apps

On a delivery app, customers compare many restaurants in a few seconds. Menu items without a photo, or with a dark, blurry phone picture, are easy to skip. Good photos help customers understand what they are ordering, set the right expectations, and make your restaurant look trustworthy before they ever try your food.

What makes a food photo sell

  • One dish, clearly shown. The dish should fill most of the frame. Customers need to see exactly what they will get.
  • Soft, even light. Food looks fresh in natural or softened light. Harsh flash and yellow kitchen light make food look flat or greasy.
  • A simple background. A clean table or neutral surface keeps attention on the food.
  • Honest portions. Photograph the dish the way it is actually served. Photos that oversell lead to disappointed customers and bad reviews.
  • Consistent style. When every item on your menu is shot with the same light and angle, your whole menu looks more professional.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Photos taken under the warm lights of the kitchen pass.
  • Food photographed in takeout containers with the lid half open.
  • Busy backgrounds with other plates, phones or napkins.
  • Using the same photo for several different dishes.
  • Old photos that no longer match the current recipe or plating.

Check each app’s photo guidelines

Each delivery app has its own rules for menu photos, such as image size, orientation and what is allowed in the frame. Requirements change over time, so check the current guidelines in your DoorDash, Uber Eats or Grubhub merchant portal before you upload. When we deliver photos, we export them in sizes ready for delivery apps and Google.

Do it once, use it everywhere

The same photos you shoot for delivery apps can also go on your Google Business Profile, your website, your printed menu and your Instagram. That is why a single professional shoot often pays for itself quickly.

Our Menu Refresh package is built for this: a 2-hour shoot on location, 10 edited high-resolution photos, 4 short vertical Reels, and delivery-app and Google sizes, for $595. See all options on our packages page, or read how much restaurant photography costs in New Jersey.
