Instagram Reels are one of the easiest ways for a restaurant to reach new customers nearby. But many owners get stuck on the same question: what should we actually post?
Here are five Reel ideas that work for almost any restaurant, café or bakery, with tips on how to film each one. You can shoot most of them with a phone, and they get even better with professional lighting and editing.
1. The signature dish close-up
Start with the dish people come back for. Film it being finished and served: the sauce pour, the cheese pull, the steam, the last garnish. Keep the camera close and let the food fill the frame.
- Hook: open on the most satisfying moment, not on an empty plate.
- Length: 7 to 15 seconds is enough.
- Caption idea: “The dish our regulars order every time.”
2. Behind the scenes in the kitchen
People love seeing how food is made. Show dough being stretched, meat on the grill, a fresh batch coming out of the oven, or your team prepping before opening. It builds trust because it shows real people and real ingredients.
- Film in short clips of 1 to 2 seconds and cut them together quickly.
- Use the natural sounds of the kitchen: sizzling, chopping, plating.
- Keep the kitchen clean and well lit before you start filming.
3. Meet the owner, chef or team
A face behind the restaurant makes people feel they already know you. Introduce your chef, tell how the restaurant started, or let a team member share their favorite item on the menu.
- Keep it short and natural. One or two sentences is enough.
- Add on-screen captions, since many people watch without sound.
- End with a simple invitation: “Come say hi this weekend.”
4. First-bite reactions
Real reactions from real customers are some of the most convincing content you can post. Film a guest taking the first bite of a popular dish, or a table sharing a big platter.
- Always ask guests for permission before filming them.
- Shoot from the side or slightly above so the food stays visible.
- Pair it with a caption like “Their face says it all.”
5. New dishes, specials and seasonal items
Every new item on the menu is a reason to post. Show the special of the week, a holiday dessert, or a seasonal drink, and tell people how long it is available. A clear deadline gives them a reason to visit soon.
- Show the dish, the price if you like, and the dates.
- Post it a few days before the weekend.
- Pin your best-performing special to the top of your profile.
Tips to make your Reels perform better
- Shoot vertical (9:16). Reels are watched full screen on phones.
- Hook in the first 2 seconds. Start with the best shot, not an intro.
- Use good light. Natural light from a window or a simple LED light makes food look fresh.
- Add text on screen. Name the dish and your location.
- Tag your location. It helps people nearby find you.
- Post consistently. A steady schedule works better than many posts at once and then nothing for weeks.
